BlackBerry Classic Surfaces in New Chinese Photo Leaks

By Humberto Saabedra on September 8, 2014

A Chinese wholesale dealer has posted new photos of the yet to be released BlackBerry Classic BB10 smartphone. The phone was first announced during Mobile World Congress in February but not shown to the public, and the new photos demonstrate how the Classic will attempt to lure back their core enterprise users. The phone is said to feature a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and 2GB of RAM, a unique combination given the current direction of smartphone chipsets with faster clockspeeds and even faster GPUs.

Like the forthcoming Passport, the Classic will retain the 1:1 ratio display and feature the venerable “toolbelt” favored by many longtime BlackBerry users. The phone is expected to be released later in the third quarter of the year, though recent internal documentation suggests that the phone may not be released this year and will instead be released next year in favor of both the Passport and the newest version of the Porsche Design series BlackBerry smartphone, codenamed Khan.

BlackBerry has recently been riding a new wave of optimism now that the company has largely been stabilized thanks to CEO John Chen’s cost-cutting measures and recent moves have seen the company better prepared to launch its new hardware and operating system updates. While the focus has been placed on new hardware, it should also be noted that the first generation devices in the Z10, Z30 and Q10 are still being updated by carriers consistently, with AT&T and Verizon being the latest carriers to push out updates in recent weeks.
