AT&T to Allow iPhone 3G S Upgrades at New Customer Price for Select Customers

By Humberto Saabedra on June 18, 2009

AT&T has announced a slight change to their upgrade policy as a result of customer complaints resulting from those with Apple’s iPhone 3G that wish to upgrade to the 3G S and felt slighted at having to pay the standard early upgrade price.

In a normal situation, AT&T will only allow customers to upgrade at the more expensive early upgrade price of $399/$499 if they are outside of the 22 month window for full upgrade pricing, or 12-18 month full upgrade eligibility window when paying more than $99/month for service.

Beginning today Thursday, AT&T’s upgrade eligibility tools will allow any current customer with early upgrade eligibility between July, August or September the chance to pre-order/purchase the iPhone 3G S at the new customer price of $199/$299 beginning on Friday in store and online.

Current customers who benefit from the change and have pre-ordered from an AT&T store will have the price of the device adjusted when picked up. Customers who pre-ordered from AT&T online will be sent an e-mail and issued an account credit for the difference.

Eligible customers who pre-order/purchase from an Apple Store or online will have upgrade eligibility reassessed based on AT&T’s new upgrade policy for iPhone 3G owners. If eligible for the lower price, Apple will issue credit for the difference as applicable.
