AT&T has confirmed in a press note sent earlier today that it will allow Apple’s FaceTime video calling service over cellular data access such as 3G and 4G LTE, provided the accounts are of the yet to be launched AT&T Mobile Share plans, which will launch next week. With the confirmation. the addition of FaceTime access is meant to be a double play, as the capability will not be allowed on unlimited data plans despite being throttled to 3GB per month.
“AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.”
This follows months of speculation regarding the expansion of FaceTime availability to cellular data since it was discovered in Beta versions of iOS 6 in recent weeks, specifically builds tagged with AT&T references, which led to today’s confirmation. iOS 6 is expected to launch in conjunction with the next iPhone next month on the 12th.
