AT&T Increases Peak HSPA Speeds by 20%

In a press release today, AT&T has announced a slight increase in upload and download speeds for users with the AT&T USBConnect 881, Sierra Wireless AirCard 881, Option GT Ultra and Option GT Ultra Express connection cards.

Users in the current 3G network spanning 275 major markets with 35 remaining markets to be launched this year can now expect download speeds between 700Kbps-1.7 Mbps, slightly higher from the former 600 Kbps-1.4 Mbps speeds while upload speeds have increased from a consistent 500-800Kbps up to 1.2 Mbps, which is a marked increase in total upload speed.

AT&T has also announced plans to upgrade to HSPA+ in order to follow up on prior statements regarding its intent to increase data speeds fivefold to a theoretical maximum of 20Mbps, which is now being targeted for deployment between 2009-2010 while preparing for the eventual transition to LTE.
