After being announced earlier this year, AT&T and Samsung have announced the limited availability of the Gear VR Innovator Edition, a virtual reality headset that works exclusively with the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone. Samsung worked with virtual reality headset developer Oculus to develop this headset, primarily meant for developers and early adopters. It is a headset that uses the Galaxy Note 4 as its display and uses it to create a 3D, 360-degree environment that can be explored through either specific applications or ports of existing tech demos.
The demo content that ships with the Gear VR was developed by Oculus and additional content can be downloaded from Oculus’ own software store pre-loaded on the 16GB memory card included in the package. Samsung and Oculus have high expectations that early adopters will buy the Gear VR and use the companion SDK to create their own apps and demonstrations for the headset. AT&T and Samsung are both selling the Gear VR online for $199 for the headset only or $249 with the recommended Bluetooth controller and will not be sold in stores. As noted, the Galaxy Note 4 is required for use and is sold separately.
