AT&T and Pantech Announce Discover High-End Android Smartphone for Jan. 11th

By Humberto Saabedra on January 7, 2013

AT&T Pantech Discover

AT&T and Pantech have jointly announced the forthcoming launch of the Korean manufacturer’s first high-end Android smartphone on the carrier with the Discover. Slated for launch this Sunday January 11th for $49.99 after new 2 year agreement. The Discover features the following specifications, which belie its reasonable post-agreement pricing:

  • 4.8-inch 720p TFT display
  • 12.6MP rear camera with 1080p video capture, HDR capability
  • 2.0 MP front-facing camera
  • NFC
  • DLNA
  • Dual 3D surround sound output
  • Android 4.0
  • 16GB internal memory
  • MicroSD external memory up to 32GB
  • GSM / EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900; HSPA+ / UMTS 850/1900/2100; LTE 700/850/1900/AWS
  • WiFi a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS
  • full VPN and EAS support plus device encryption

As well as the above specifications, the Discover features Pantech’s Easy Experience simplified user interface for first time smartphone users, following the debut of the feature on last September’s release of the previous Pantech Burst as well as AT&T’s Drive Mode app, which controls the device while vehicles are in motion in order to prevent the phone from becoming an active distraction to the driver.

With Pantech focused on making a solid name for itself in the market following a rather in auspicious start developing cheap, inexpensive product, the manufacturer is poised to become a solid alternative with devices such as the Discover with very reasonable post contract pricing compared to equivalent models by different manufacturers, which would be priced at double or triple the Discover’s $49.99 price tag for identical specifications.
