After months of decision making, the damages in the landmark infringement case between Apple and Samsung have been finalized, with Judge Lucy Koh granting Apple $950 million for damages related to Samsung’s sale of 26 devices that were found to infringe Apple’s patents and trademarks. However, it was not a complete victory for Apple as the requested device injunction against Samsung was denied.
This decision follows last month’s meeting between the leaders of both companies meant to avoid another trial set for later this month, which was held without any sort of agreement reached to avoid another costly court battle and the next trial is expected to be fought over another set of Samsung devices thought to infringe on Apple’s trademarks and patents. Both Apple and Samsung can appeal their respective judgements and appeals are expected in both decisions.
Samsung had previously argued that it owed Apple only $52 million more in damages on top of the $640 million upheld when the first decision was handed down in 2012, but Judge Koh also decided to uphold the $290 million judgement handed down by the jury in November at the end of the retrial.
