Reports have been released that Apple has filed to trademark the name iPhone. This all but confirms that Apple is planning to launch handheld phone in the near future.
The filing was on September 15, but Apple has been circling around the notion of iPhone since 1999, when the company trademarked iPhone.org.
Rumors continue to fly about the device, with analysts debating as to if the device will be a basic phone with an iPod integrated, or a smartphone with advanced functionality. Other analysts point to the potential for Apple to release both basic and smartphone models at the same time.
