Apple today quietly added a Special Events section to its second-generation and third-generation Apple TV units. The iOS-based set top boxes now list a live playback option Apple Special Media Event, with no description.
This not only marks the return of live viewing of Apple product announcements, but the first time Apple has simulcast such an event on Apple TV. The iOS-based second-generation and third-generation devices will employ HTTP Streaming via a new Apple Events item on the Apple TV home screen.
Apple is also offering a stream live, via its web site.
Apple discontinued live coverage of Special Media Events years ago, creating a two-tiered access to Apple products in the media. Today’s announcements are themed as a “little more” to show. The event is expected to unveil the new iPad mini, as well as a Retina version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and possibly an upgrade to the Mac mini with third-generation Intel Core processors, and USB 3.0.
An earlier version of this article referred to the Apple TV stream, the article has been revised to reflect the web version of the live stream.
