Apple has initiated a recall of the iPhone 3G’s Ultracompact USB Power Adapter. This adapter is also sold in standalone fashion, for other iPod and USB charging devices.
The adapter being recalled was isolated to 14 of the iPhone 3G’s launch countries (including the United States), and is being recalled due to the potential for electric shock. The metal prongs on the adapter can break off, leaving them inside the power socket… creating the danger of electrocution.
Because of this, Apple advises all owners to immediately stop using the power adapter. iPhone can still be recharged using the USB data cable, as well as any other model of USB power adapter.
Apple has created an exchange program web site for the power adapter, and is taking advanced exchange requests. However, Apple also notes that the replacement adapters will not be available until October 10. In addition, on October 10, the power adapters can be exchanged on-the-spot at any Apple Retail Store.
