RCR Wireless is reporting that China Telecom is beginning trials of GSM1x – a new platform that replaces the data component of GSM (CSD, GPRS, EDGE or UTMS) with CDMA2000.
So, I started thinking, if GSM is going to be phased out with W-CDMA (which would replace the voice component of GSM with CDMA, and is the “natural” migration path for GSM carriers, but keeps GSM in the loop for data), AND carriers now dumping the data side of GSM for CDMA, it’s starting to look more and more like carriers around the world are trying to find ways to dump GSM from both the data and voice side of the equation…
