Google has announced that it is rolling out a new GPS-based location sharing service in the vien of priducts such as Loopt known as Google Latitude.
The service works by going to google.com/latitude on a mobile phone and the service uses either triangulation or GPS if available to calculate your exact location with the capability to send your location to friends and adding them to the service via email, which is opt-in.
Currently the service is available via iGoogle on the PC, and on a growing list of handsets such as:
- T-Mobile G1
- most color BlackBerry devices
- most Windows Mobile 5.0+ devices
- most Symbian S60 devices (Nokia smartphones)
- many Java-enabled (J2ME) mobile phones
Both the iPhone and the iPod Touch will have their Maps application updated to support latitude along with Sony Ericsson phones with Google Maps for Mobile preinstalled.
Works pretty well on my Touch Pro, Touch Diamond and Mogul.
This is excellent. I can track people now.
They need to approve me first. It works pretty well on Blackberry.

Now it only needs to be more integrated. It is great, but having to open Google Maps to update your location is a pain. If I could have it do it automatically in the background every so many minutes/hours/days that would be great.
