Previously we reported on Microsoft’s reversal of its deceptive policy to block Internet Explorer Mobile 6 (commonly referred to as “6 on 6”, for its release on Windows Mobile 6.1). The policy was deceptive, as Microsoft intentionally lied, claiming that current devices could not handle IE Mobile 6 properly via a firmware update. PhoneNews.com highlighted how Windows Mobile 2003 devices have been shown to properly run Windows Mobile 6.1, further insulating Microsoft’s debacle of update deceptions.
Reporting from PhoneNews.com and others forced Microsoft to change the policy, and as such, Microsoft has agreed to allow Windows Mobile 6.1 device manufacturers to issue the update… of course, if they chose to do so. From what PhoneNews.com has seen from the industry thus far, only device makers with relatively new devices will not ask consumers to pony up another $300 to $900 for a new phone… just to get IE Mobile 6. In other words, if a manufacturer has a newer model of device, they will ask you to pay full retail for that, rather than issue such a minor update for their older phones.
The good news is that Sprint’s Touch Diamond appears to be a lock for getting one of the first official releases of 6 on 6. A leaked prototype firmware has leaked on multiple web sites, from an anonymous tester. PhoneNews.com is hosting a copy of the firmware at the link below.
