Internet Explorer Mobile 6.0 for Windows Mobile 6.1, or “6 on 6” as it is commonly referred to, has not been the brightest point for Microsoft lately. First announced back at the fall CTIA show last year, it was meant to help bring Windows Mobile back up to speed in the browser wars. Internet Explorer Mobile, even by Microsoft’s own admission, has paled in comparison to Apple’s MobileSafari on iPhone and iPod touch.
But, then Microsoft announced that even the latest devices would not receive Internet Explorer Mobile 6. As we quickly discovered, Microsoft was blatantly lying about the reason… there was no technical/performance reason (which Microsoft claimed at the time) for not releasing 6 on 6 to each and every Windows Mobile 6.1 device.
Making a bad situation worse, Microsoft admitted that 6 on 6 would not best Safari but “would try to get the marketshare not already using Safari.”
As we reported over on CentralGadget.com in the evening, Microsoft showcased 6 on 6 at their annual pre-CES keynote. And, while there weren’t any new features shown, Microsoft did highlight that the program would be rolled into firmware updates for some existing phones. Only the HTC Touch Pro and Samsung Omnia were shown at the event running 6 on 6.
