Palm has updated the Treo 700wx to Windows Mobile 6. The device was long thought to be passed over for upgrading to Windows Mobile 6, however, rumors started after a Verizon document placed the update on their release roadmap.
However, it is not clear why the device was not updated to Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. Windows Mobile 6.1 is a free upgrade to all Windows Mobile 6.0 devices, however, the device manufacturer must release the update to end-users.
Also not clear is if the Sprint version of the Treo 700wx will be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. On Verizon, the Treo 700wx is Palm’s latest Windows Mobile device. On Sprint, the Treo 800w is now available, putting a financial interest in Palm to not upgrade the device… and create needless e-waste for people considering an upgrade.
Palm cautions users that the Treo 700wx update files can only be downloaded once per device. This is due to a licensing agreement with Microsoft.
