In a joint press release today, mobile platform solutions developer Qualcomm and content development platform developer Adobe Software have announced the integration of Adobe’s Flash rich content development platform into the newest version of the BREW Mobile Platform which now includes support for the ActionScript rapid application development language in order to fuse web access with Flash based applications for real-time information retrieval as well as support for common Flash development tools, and touchscreen display support.
The updated platform will still be backward compatible with older BREW applications as well as being open to developers, operators and handset manufacturers worldwide beginning Fall of this year with no further specific information at this time.
This recent push for Flash development at the chipset level stems from carriers such as Japan’s KDDI AU and Verizon Wireless being the first to deploy Flash-based user interfaces in their respective markets and further desires to extend the functionality beyond dynamic menus and simple animations.
