Nokia has issued a substantial firmware update to its original N95 (N95-1) smartphone, bringing it up to v21 and adding support for Flash Lite 3 and in-browser flash, among other additions. This new firmware presents N95-1 owners with a terrific opportunity to celebrate Update Your Phone Day, if not a bit belated.
The update comes as a bit of a surprise and a major treat for N95-1 owners, as Nokia has not notoriously been known for releasing a steady stream of updates for its older smart devices. It should be noted that this update only serves the original version of the N95 — the version featuring 64MB RAM, the smaller 950 mAh battery, and no support for AT&T’s 3G in the United States.
The update itself adds Flash Lite 3 and support for Flash playback in the S60 browser, improvements to Bluetooth headset connections, widget web runtime support, improved Wi-Fi browsing, enhancements to landscape/portrait screen rotation switches, and many more bugfixes and speed improvements. The N95-1 was a milestone device for Nokia, being the first to pack a five megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and also featuring internal GPS, Wi-Fi B/G, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Unfortunately, no similar updates for the N95-3 have been made available yet. The N95-3 is the most popular version amongst American customers, as it features full support for AT&T’s UMTS/HSDPA 850 and 1900 bands, an upgrade to 128MB RAM, and a larger battery.
