After weeks of leaks, LG has formally announced the future launch of its next G-series flagship in the G3, the first Android smartphone from the manufacturer to feature a display at Quad HD resolution or 2560×1440 while the display size remains at 5.5 inches and pixel density is now at 538 pixels per inch compared to the G2.
The G3 features a metallic finish rear backplate, but is otherwise made of high-quality plastic. Carrying over the layout from the G2 and G Flex, the volume toggle and home buttons are on the back of the phone rather than the sides to improve usability and LG claims this makes the buttons more natural to use when the device is held with one hand.
The phone also features a 13-megapixel camera aided by optical image stabilization, laser-assisted auto-focus, and a dual-LED flash with a 2.1-megapixel user-facing camera and wide aperture lens. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with four cores at 2.5GHz each and will come in several different configurations, including a 2GB model and a 3GB model depending on market and carrier while internal storage will also vary between 16GB and 32GB, again depending on region and carrier with a microSD expansion slot that supports up to the current maximum available 128GB cards.
The G3 also features a built-in 1W speaker with Boost AMP technology for improved sound reproduction and a 3,000mAh removable battery that supports wireless charging through multiple standards. It runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat and also includes a new, redesigned user interface from LG that is flatter in terms of navigation layers and more closely resembles native Android.
Some of the new software features for the G3 also include a kill switch that owners can use to disable the device; the carry over of the Knock Code for personalized device security; a new Content Lock to secure and protect individual files; and a new Smart Keyboard for adaptive learning of the owner’s typing habits that grows or shrinks dynamically based on the users preferences; finally, the Smart Notice personal assistant rounds out the phone’s features, similar to Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana. The LG G3 will be available later this Summer.
