Earlier this year, UTStarcom had to pull out the black spray-paint and cover-up their accidental release of the Sidekick iD. History has a way of repeating itself…
The Sidekick iD’s announcement was delayed, but it was too late for UTStarcom to cover up the announcement on their banners which were hung at CTIA in Orlando earlier this year. After photos started to leak, T-Mobile and partners forced UTStarcom to cover up the photos with black paint.
Fast forward to today. The UTStarcom banners prominently promoted the SMT5700… a device which hasn’t been announced yet, and is only known through blurry FCC submission documents until today. What we do know about the SMT5700 is that it is an EDGE device aimed at iPhone, being a more-professional messaging competitor.

The device, while shown with Windows Mobile 5, is expected to be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.0 before it is formally introduced. The phone is sourced from foreign manufacturer Amoi, and is expected to launch on at least AT&T. UTStarcom declined to comment beyond stating that the device “has not yet been announced”.
