AT&T has announced the launch of its first HSUPA compatible modem, as well as network deployment of the protocol beginning the remainder of this year into 2008 for all existing and new 3G markets.
The AirCard 881 by Sierra Wireless features support for the faster upload speeds provided by the new protocol (2.4 Mbps upload with a sustained 500-800 kbps and bursts up to 1.1 Mbps being made possible compared to the previous 768 kbps upload with a sustained 220-320 kbps and bursts up to 500 kbps).
The modem is a PC Card form factor device with support for triband W-CDMA access for true global roaming as well as quadband GPRS/EDGE support outside of 3G areas.
The modem is now available online from AT&T for $100 when an appropriate LaptopConnect plan is selected at $59.99 or higher along with a new 2 year agreement before an additional $100 mail in rebate, making the card free.
