Motorola has agreed to purchase 50% of UI Holdings AB from Sony Ericsson under a new joint agreement announced in a press release today.
UI Holdings is the parent company of UIQ Technology, the company responsible for maintaining and licensing the user interface and Symbian platform used currently on Sony Ericsson handsets such as the M600 and P1i smart devices and is also the basis for Motorola’s Z8 and forthcoming Z10 high-end multimedia handsets.
The agreement covers further investment in platform development tools, a commitment to maintaining platform independence, and encouragement to bring in more handset manufacturers as licensees or shareholders.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed by either party, and the deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
