Verizon Re-Reminds People About Their URL Logging

Verizon Wireless has begun to issue a new privacy bulletin, inside every Verizon Wireless customer’s bill.

You can download the PDF here, but basically, if you are a Verizon Wireless customer, your web browsing activity will be aggregated inside Verizon for targeted advertising, and monitoring.

This information could be subpoenaed by any governmental agency. As such, we strongly encourage you to read the above PDF, and opt-out of the URL tracking.

Verizon Wireless is the first national carrier to begin tracking the entire Internet history of a wireless customer’s mobile usage. Verizon, in its defense, does tout that it does not sell or market this information to any other company. However, because the information is being individually tracked, a government agency could supoena this information as evidence against a wireless customer, no different from call logs.

It should be no surprise to Verizon or to readers that PhoneNews.com adamantly opposes this practice. The Internet should be an open pipe that is not monitored by your provider, and we’ll keep reminding you of this policy whenever relevant.
