Verizon Wireless today announced that they have begun activation of the Access Overload Control (ACCOLC) system for first responders. This system, part of the CDMA platform, allows the network to sense which handsets have priority to access the network when the network is overloaded.
Sprint and Verizon both have Accolc-enabled on all handsets, but have left it disabled on the network side. Verizon will brand the service as Wireless Priorirty Access (WPS) and has enabled it in several major metropolitan areas, with full network-wide deployment of the service by year’s end.
If you are a first responder with a Verizon phone, please visit the government’s WPS Requestor to provide the necessary information to have your handset activated.
