Virgin Mobile has quietly launched its version of the ZTE Peel 3G enabled sleeve for the second and third generation iPod Touch with pricing set at $100.
Unlike the version sold on Sprint which is available with a 5GB monthly data plan, the version sold on Virgin Mobile is being sold with a paltry 500MB monthly prepaid plan for $20 a month, making it less attractive than it realistically could be considering its new focus on cheap data and the availability of unlimited data on smartphones for $5 more per month.
This is a bit of a slap in the face, considering that Virgin Mobile MiFi’s that are sold at Walmart have a 1 GB $20 plan. The ZTE Peel gets half the data… for exactly the same monthly rate.
Clearly, Sprint’s Prepaid Group is betting on imperfect information, that customers won’t realize that they can get more data for the same money via a nearly-identical solution from the same company.
I wouldn’t plan to have this plan last too long.
