Virgin Mobile has officially announced a new service for those looking to take more direct control of their wireless plan that features licensed technology from the former Zact Mobile MVNO. Launching as Virgin Mobile Custom on August 9th exclusively in Walmart locations, the Virgin Mobile Custom program will allow more control over monthly service costs as well as multiple lines, which would be a first for Virgin Mobile USA.
The program will tie the technology recently licensed from Zact Mobile parent ItsOn to a new slate of smartphones that will allow for the following services, such as allowing families to manage and activate up to five lines on a single account starting at $6.98 per line, with the Base plan including 20 text messages and 20 voice minutes per month. Customers can also choose to add unlimited text messaging for $10 or unlimited voice service for $18, while the standard unlimited talk and text plan will cost $35 per month, though the $10 and $18 unlimited options cannot be shared between lines.
The biggest change to Virgin Mobile Custom over standard service plans will allow customers to choose optional add-ons, such as unlimited access to Facebook or music streaming that can be added on a recurring or non-recurring basis and can be adjusted at any time during the month, even daily, directly from the customer’s device through the bundled ItsOn software. Customers will also be able add or subtract the amount of voice, text or data they use with real-time adjustments so customers know exactly what will be spent for the month or the day.
To celebrate the launch, Virgin Mobile has also announced the forthcoming launch of Virgin Mobile Custom-capable smartphones which feature the built-in software needed for the plan in the ZTE Emblem for $79.88, LG Pulse for $99.88, or LG Unify for $129.88. Virgin Mobile Custom will not be available for purchase from Virgin Mobile directly, though the Virgin Mobile Custom Control application will be released in September for iOS/Android smartphones regardless of carrier.
