Following yesterday’s formal debut, Verizon has confirmed plans to release both the Galaxy Note III and the Galaxy Watch as a companion device for those that pre-order from the respective carriers. The Galaxy Note III features a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel main camera, with the user-facing camera at 2 megapixels.
Both cameras can capture 1080p HD video and carry over all the main camera features first debuted with the Galaxy S4 earlier this year. Additional specifications include a removable 3,200mAh battery, 32/64GB of internal storage with support for microSD cards up to 64GB Wi-Fi with ac support, Bluetooth 4.0LE, GPS, and GLONASS radios, along with infrared for controlling TVs, MHL for TV output, and USB 3.0.
The Note runs Android 4.3 as well as Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. Most of the software is carried over from the Galaxy S4, but Samsung has made additional improvements to the S Pen stylus and its software. A new Air Command tool brings S Pen functions to the forefront, and it now lets users take instant screen shots, create memos with specific actions, search through notes, create searchable scrapbooks, and the same note taking capability as before. Lastly, the Note 3 includes improved multitasking with Pen apps. The Pen apps are similar to LG’s QSlide apps that place a small app on top of any other main app to simulate multitasking on the devices.
The Galaxy Watch is Samsung’s take on the smart watch as pioneered by Sony Ericsson and taken to its current limits by featuring an 800 MHz processor, powered by a new platform with its own suite of apps and compatibility with select smartphones despite Samsung explicitly limiting compatibility to the new 2014 Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Note III for the time being, though it also features additional features not found in other smartwatches, such as a camera and loudspeakers with noise cancellation, at the expense of battery life. Verizon will begin pre-orders on Friday starting at 9am EDT with both the Galaxy Note III and Gear watch being made available as a set, as the Gear will not launch until October in the US.
