While it has been rumored since CTIA that UTStarcom would carry the SMT5800, we haven’t heard a word about it since we first posted blurry photos almost a year ago. However, rumor site Boy Genius Report is reporting that point to the SMT5800 heading at least to Verizon Wireless.
The SMT5800 will breathe new life into the CDMA Windows Mobile Standard device market, which has not seen any significant Microsoft Smartphones since the Motorola Q. Like the Q series, the SMT5800 features a built-in QWERTY keyboard, however, it does so with a slider that comes out of the side of the device.
The device appears to launch in a similar fashion to the PPC-6800 Mogul, with Windows Mobile 6 and EV-DO Rev 0, and a promised firmware update to EV-DO Rev A to be released in the future. The HTC Vox is already available for sale in Canada on Telus.
