Internal T-Mobile documentation has confirmed that T-Mobile will begin charging overage fees on its $10 200MB data plan instead of merely throttling customers beginning on August 14th. The changes will apply to those that sign up for the plan on that date as well as those that have the plan before then. The overage charges break down to $0.10/MB on the Classic rate plans and $0.15/MB on the new Value rate plans, with overage caps of $40 and $45 respectively. T-Mobile has responded to the information by releasing the following statement to All Things D:
“Customers will incur overages of $0.10 per MB when they exceed 200MB of data ($10 for 10MB) up to a maximum monthly payment of $40 with Value plans or $45 with Classic plans for data including the 200 MB add-on fee. T-Mobile will notify customers when they reach 90% of their allotment and again when they incur overages with the option to sign up for another data plan.â€
This move means that T-Mobile is beginning to move away from its recent trend of throttling customers instead of charging overage fees and is going back to the industry standard of overage fees for data access, with Sprint remaining as the sole carrier that touts unlimited data access with no overage fees or throttling.
I thought tmobile would try to please customers and gain more before att takes over. Either way they are still making some horrible decisions and I would never switch to them even if att doesn’t take them over.
If T-Mobile does indeed target existing customers with this change, it will probably be an ETF Out for affected customers. That would be a material change to a customer’s data service.
