Sprint today did something long rumored since it announced its merger with Nextel, that it will be moving its headquarters back to Overland Park.
Prior to the Sprint Nextel merger, Sprint had maintained its World Headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas, spending millions of dollars on the facility’s renewal and in the Overland Park community. While Sprint remained comitted to the facility, it re-located its official headquarters to Reston, VA. Sprint re-named overland park one of their “operational headquarters”.
This process clearly damaged Sprint Nextel. With Sprint CDMA, QChat, and WiMAX the future of their network, operating leadership outside of the Nextel headquarters in Reston, VA, caused conflict and lag in communication.
Sprint says that this re-location will only affect executive-level leadership, and that they have no intention to close the Reston, VA headquarters, or lay any employees off because of this action.
Sources have kept PhoneNews.com briefed for years that former CEO Gary Forsee specifically directed employees to keep the World Headquarters banner which previously was fixed on the entrance to their Overland Park headquarters. While Forsee never acted on that, current CEO Dan Hesse today made good on those intentions.
it’s about time.
