Sprint today confirmed to PhoneNews.com that the Samsung Intercept will be upgraded to Android 2.2, Froyo.
The Intercept launched with Android 2.1 shortly after the official release of Android 2.2. As an entry-level Android offering, the phone is meant to compete with budget solutions such as iPhone 3GS.
The Android 2.2 update brings the Intercept a badly-needed feature in comparison to the aging HTC Hero and Samsung Moment, which are both sold at similar price-points with contract. Sprint has already stated that both Hero and Moment will not be updated past Android 2.1.
As we previously reported, the Intercept may be a better choice for new buyers, compared to the Moment. Despite having a slower CPU and poorer quality screen, Samsung’s refusal to update the Moment leaves it in a state of planned obsolescence.
David, your loss of contacts may have been due to a well-known severe Google synchronization bug. If you have contacts on an Android phone–e.g., transferred from old to new phone by a Sprint or Best Buy employee–and you then tell the phone to synchronize with your Google account (which has no phone numbers, only email addresses), Google Sync silently destroys your entire phone book.
My niece ran into this same nasty bug. It is surprising that the bug still exists in Android 2.2.

HATE the new version it suxx it has less options nd less things than the old version nd i am trying to c if i can git the old version bakk it iz wayy bettr i cant blev the newer version iz worse than the older 1
Yeah, me too. I “have” noticed a problem with the gallery. When I move my pictures and videos off the card and onto my camera, the old thumbnails show up in place, until I go through them. And speaking of the camera, I don’t like the fact they take you direct to the gallery. Used to be a separate preview gallery when you clicked on the thumbnail from the camera/camcorder program. As I have a copy of 2.1, will be downgrading, but not likely until sometime after I get back home in OR, after traveling back with friends that have been in the area for about a month, in the car they got for an early Christmas present back in September, when he was out visiting.
On a good note, I was quite surprised and shocked, but have gotten used to the fact the screen now rotates all the way around.
WOW!!! I cannot believe some of the comments on here. Most of the complaining I hear about the new update is due to users unaware of how to use the android OS. This update is fantastic!! UI is extremely better as well as overall performance and speed. The oy things I can even think about being bad are the lack of flash and live wallpaper. Other than that this is the best thing that happened for this phone. Any person thinking of doing the upgrade go ahead, forgrt about the other knuckleheads comments and make ur intercept. 100 times better with this upgrade!!
My wife and kid just got it last week. I was checking everday while on vacation over the holidays. Of course the first day back to work and the kid gets it that morning and the wife that night…
After over a week with Froyo on their Intercepts my life is much, much better. The gripes they had previously about the phone are gone. (I heard EVERY complaint, EVERY time, about ANYTHING that went wrong on both phones.) Both updates were flawless. There was no loss of contacts or any of that.
The only complaint was from my daughter about the loss of the WiFi toggle on the notification bar. We’ll just call it a “feature”. 🙂 This loss is easily fixed/worked around of course.
As far as Flash goes; This phone has a pre-Cortex processor, sooooo…

Flash is painful. It runs on my Epic, not well by any means, but it runs. If you read up on Flash overall you’ll see that Flash is a problem all unto itself and not just on phones.
I’m pleased with the update. Everything seems to be running smoother and some of the irritating glitches that were giving me buyer’s are gone…I think. Is it just me, or do all of you notice that the problem with the nonresponsive home and “back” button has disappeared? I’ve only had the upgrade for a week, but everything seems much smoother. I like the phone much better with this upgrade.

@jenny i have the intercept and DON”T GET IT. It is the slowest thing I’v ever had in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So my mom called me this morning at 9:05, and my phone was so slow it couldnt pick it up in time. Then now its 9:20 and i JUST got ahold of her because it took me 15 minutes to dial her number and inbetween this it called 2 other people without me knowing. UGH. And the upgrade isnt available to me! It says “Upgrade not available, please check with your local sprint store” I hate this phone, and it’s pretty new!!!!!!!
