Sony Mobile has announced on its developer blog that it has taken the first steps to ensure full compatibility with the AOSP branch of Android by opening a Github repository containing its own sanctioned build of AOSP Android for the Xperia Z flagship. The intent is to develop the build for full compatibility with the assistance of the ROM and development community while sanctioning such development officially with open source components.
However, the ROM in its current state is incomplete, as it lacks full driver integration for the cellular radio and only partial support for all of the sensors built into the phone, with only the microSD slot and Wi-Fi radio working completely. As such, the AOSP build of Android for the Sony Xperia Z is meant to galvanize the development community into supporting the device with further development, while Sony Mobile provides the starting point. Below, an introductory video on the overview of the project:
In other related news, Sony Mobile have confirmed that Jelly Bean rollout timeframes will be confirmed for the 2012 Sony Ericsson/Mobile smartphone lineup in the Xperia P, Xperia Go, the Xperia S, SL, acro S and ion starting next week, as the Jelly Bean update development is in the final stages for those devices.
