Sony Mobile has officially announced the successor to its previous attempts at Android tablets in the Tablet S and P in the Xperia Tablet Z. Rather than repeat the past by developing and releasing two tablets in different form factors, Sony has decided to put all of its development resources into one 10-inch tablet that may actually be a sales success for the beleaguered conglomerate.
The Xperia Tablet Z takes after the design of the current generation of Xperia smartphones and features a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal storage, Android Jelly Bean 4.1, a 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 resolution display with the updated Mobile Bravia Engine 2 rendering engine, an 8.1-megapixel camera with the Exmor R camera sensor module , NFC support, LTE support via Qualcomm’s MDM9215M radio, microSD expansion and Sony’s own “S-Force” virtual surround sound technology into a 6.9mm-thick, 495 gram body shell, making it as light as the current iPad Mini, at the expense of total battery capacity at 6,000 mAh.
Sony Mobile has yet to confirm pricing and availability for the tablet, but it’s already shaping up to be a massive improvement from both the Tablet S and Tablet P in terms of specifications and performance, with the biggest improvements being in the display and processor.
