After weeks of leaks and rumors Sony Mobile has officially announced the forthcoming availability of the new QX Series lineup of Cyber-Shot-branded camera modules designed to be attached to Android and iPhone smartphones. The idea behind the camera modules is to provide an additional accessory for smartphone owners that are looking for improved image quality not found on built-in smartphone cameras.
The initial models in the QX series consist of the QX10 and QX100 camera modules which are based off of the current RX10 and RX100 high-end point-and-shoot CyberShot cameras. The QX100 has a 20.1-megapixel camera sensor and offers a 3.6x optical zoom while the QX10 offers an 18.2-megapixel camera sensor and 10x optical zoom, with the additional capability to be used as standalone cameras without the need to pair them to smartphones. The QX series will be released later this month, with the QX100 priced at $499.99 and $249.99 for the QX10, respectively and pre-orders are now underway at select online retailers.
