Out of all of the current Windows Phone 7 models, owners of the Samsung Omnia 7 Windows Phone smartphone have had the worst luck in regards to updates and the latest update is not helping matters. Omnia 7 models with the v4.10.1.9 bootloader are currently unable to apply the latest patch available (7392), ironically designed to address longstanding issues with updates.
Enterprising hackers have rediscovered old hardware hacking techniques and determined that “jumping†the contacts (running electrical current at select contact points) on the smartphone triggers the download mode in the phone with the affected bootloader and is allowing the application of the latest update.
It should be noted that such activity places a high risk on the user and on the hardware, as multiple 100kOhm resistors or a single 300kOhm resistor are required to trigger the hardware debug mode in order to commence with the update, something not recommended for the average owner. Samsung has yet to address the issue.
In related news, the Windows Phone Blog has confirmed that the long-awaited AT&T Samsung Focus update still has no timeline for release placing those owners in limbo while owners of other variants are now receiving updates.
