We may not be the richest member of the mobile media, but we stand with you… Not the telcos.
PhoneNews.com, like most news sites, is run by ads. Our two biggest advertising firms have historically been Google and AOL. While you may think of AOL as being all about charging for dial-up service, and running rival tech blogs… they’re actually a major force in the advertising business.
This month, AOL was acquired by Verizon. This puts us feeling a bit unconfortable in trying to continue our business relationships with AOL. At the end of the day, it’s Verizon that would be controlling a major stake of our ad flow.
We don’t have a problem running ads from telecommunication companies. Google is one, arguably. But we do have a problem with a major carrier controlling what ads run on PhoneNews.com.
At the end of the month, we’ll be shaking up a lot on PhoneNews.com – but AOL/Verizon won’t be calling the shots on our ad space… that we can promise.
