Samsung has confirmed that it will showcase its first Apple iPod touch competitor in the Samsung Galaxy Player during CES.
The Galaxy Player is notable for being the first Android-based media player from a major mobile phone manufacturer and Android handset developer as well as being a viable competitor to the iPod Touch, at least on paper.
The device features a 9.9mm thick bodyshell, Android 2.2, 1GHz Hummingbird CPU, 4-inch WVGA resolution touch display, T-DMB TV tuner for Korea, SoundAlive audio technology, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.2 megapixel rear camera with front facing VGA camera for video calling, GPS support, HD video playback, microSD card slot and a removable battery.
Samsung is also touting full access to the Android Market as well as its own Samsung Apps marketplace, though previous attempts to include Google’s Android Market by other Android-based media player manufacturers such as Archos have met with little success due to Google’s requirements for Android Market access, so it remains to be seen whether Samsung’s Galaxy Player will signal a change of heart by Google.
