Samsung has quietly announced the successor to its Galaxy Player series of Android-powered personal media players in the Galaxy Player 70 Plus, which is nearly identical to the current Galaxy Player 50, save for a few key differences in hardware.
The biggest difference and improvement from the Player 50 is the addition of a new 1GHz dual-core processor, 5.0 megapixel rear camera, microSD card slot, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, FM radio, and a larger battery. The Galaxy Player 70 Plus will launch in South Korea first at $357 for the 16GB version, or $420 for the 32GB version, but there’s no word from Samsung on whether the device will be launched outside of Korea such was done for the previous versions, or whether it will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich.
Another issue with the Galaxy Player series is the complete lack of marketing for the device series as a whole, as it with other alternatives suffer from a complete lack of awareness from consumers that may be looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous iPod Touch, although the fact that the previous generation of Samsung Galaxy Player devices were relegated to Woot clearance sales before being quietly released on a national level with no marketing said more about Samsung’s confidence in the devices than any real lack of demand for them.
To add to the lack of awareness among consumers, they were also poorly received critically due to their inferior hardware compared to the Samsung Galaxy Android smartphone both devices were based off of, as well as pricing compared to other equivalent Android media players and the iPod touch, despite having better features on paper, such as expandable memory slots, a higher resolution main camera and larger displays despite having a lower total resolution.
With the Samsung Galaxy Player 70 Plus, the company is clearly trying to define a market for the Android-powered portable media player and has the improved hardware to match, but the question remains: Will anyone outside of the home market and Android enthusiasts actually care for this model, or will they continue to forgo dedicated media players for smartphones? Only time will tell if Samsung’s latest Android-powered media player will correct the mistakes made with the Galaxy Player 40 and 50, but the Galaxy Player 70 Plus looks to be a step in the right direction.
