OmniVision Technologies, the company that designs and markets high-performance semiconductor image sensors, have now developed a brand new image sensor which grabs more pixels within the same space used in current chips, for example the new sensor will be able to squeeze 8 megapixels into the same space of current 3 megapixel chips.
The new back illuminating technology improves the image quality while extending its pixel roadmap down to 0.9 micron pixels, which is an important development for continued miniaturization of digital imaging technology.
This new technology is said to be available in high-end phones as early as 2009.
