Nokia has issued a firmware update for the T-Mobile variant of the Nuron 5230.
The new version, v.12.2.082 makes the following new additions: “Great new features, Updated applications, and Performance improvements.” Nokia has not elaborated what new features were added, nor what applications specifically were updated.
The update may be available from the SW Update version, but that function does not work properly on the prepaid version of the Nuron (currently exclusive to Costco). As previously reported, the prepaid Nuron cannot access services outside of Ovi, including SW Update.
Regardless, all T-Mobile Nurons can be updated via Ovi Suite on a Windows PC.
The Nokia Nuron remains the cheapest no-contract, and prepaid, smartphone in America. At $119, without any contract, the phone delivers S60 5th Edition as well as 2 GB of preloaded storage, along with Ovi Maps for free off-network GPS navigation in 180 countries worldwide. The cost of the prepaid Nuron, with Ovi Maps for standalone GPS, continues to be far below the cost of a traditional GPS navigation device with worldwide map data.
Update: Costco is now selling the phone online again, for $119.99 without contract. Costco membership is not required to purchase a phone online.
I just got one from Costco today sans contract for $100.
Indeed, about a week after this article was written, the price was cut $20 more to $99.99.
