Nokia has announced the latest official update to the hacker friendly N900 mobile internet device in version 1.2 following the unofficial leak last month. The update features: two-way real-time video calling, improved Ovi Maps support,and event invitation options from the messaging inbox. The update is currently available for UK users today with the worldwide rollout slated for Wednesday.
In related news, Nokia has also confirmed that the merged MeeGo operating system will not be made available in an official capacity for the N900, despite the device being used as the official ARM-based hardware development platform for the new operating system. The N900, as originally released, is powered by Maemo Linux, which was united with Intel’s Moblin to form the MeeGo platform.
It is unclear if developers will be able to port MeeGo, in its final form, to the device. However, MeeGo development builds indicate that it may be possible, albeit in a pared-down version. The main reason appears to be the N900’s limited memory footprint, which may prohibit it from being used as a production device. It is likely that Nokia is using modified N900s, with more memory, internally to build MeeGo with Intel.
