With the growth of VoIP services and apps on smartphones, there are few opportunities to differentiate apps and services to stand out in the increasingly crowded field. A new free VoIP service in Bolt aims to change that by not behaving like the standard VoIP service that requires everyone to use the same app for free calls and focuses on your most frequent contacts by grouping them together based on calling frequency.
The app is Android-only for now with an iOS version in development, and the company aims to turn the app into a complete platform with messaging as well as voice. The biggest hook and the reason it aims to replace the standard dialer app is due to the app design, if you contact friends and family that don’t have the app, it falls back to the standard cellular connection for voice calls as normal, while calls between Bolt users are free and routed over the cellular data connection or Wi-Fi. Calls between Bolt users are light on data use, with calls only using 60KB per minute, which equals 142 hours of use on a 500MB data allowance, as an example, making it a viable VoIP replacement for those that prefer data over voice minutes.
Amazing piece of information. What initiation protocol does Bolt requires?
