During a news conference at the MWC, T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhvan confirmed that the 3G network in the US will launch during the summer though he gave no specific date as to when. He also explained why 3G capable devices are being launched ahead of the network launch, stating a desire to be prepared.
When asked about the delay in launching the network from its former 2007 date, Akhavan cited further delays due to spectrum issues, but went on to say that the network will launch in metro areas while also proclaiming it to be one of the best in the US once it becomes available.
Finally, when asked about a possible Android based handset, Akhavan stated a fourth quarter launch, a different response than the one given last year during the unveiling of the platform where the carrier would not confirm whether it would carry such devices.
