Newer firmware releases being tested by Sprint implement MIDP 2.0, and add support for Motion JPEG video.
We now also know a lot more about the A700’s streaming video components. The phone will use Qualcomm encoding and decoding platforms to handle video. These are QTV 2.4 and QCamcorder 1.2, respectively.
QTV and QCamcorder platforms do not currently support two-way live video streaming, so it looks like video calling won’t make it into the A700. Instead, the platform will much more likely be implemented in a fashion similar to ReadyLink, you send a video message from one video phone to another, once the receiver gets the video, then he/she can respond to it.
QTV also supports 3GPP, H.263, and RealVideo formats, and with the player operating outside of the Java envirornment, streaming video programs similar to MobiTV will be able to operate at a speed much closer to 30 frames per second. The media player can also play stored video in the phone at much higher quality, as high as MPEG-4 Level 2 quality.
