Today PocketGear has announced that it has acquired venerable mobile application provider Handango. The two companies combined will now offer over 140,000 applications to the major mobile platforms worldwide including Android, Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm, Linux and Java.
The new storefront will have a presence in 175 countries and applications compatible with more than 2,000 devices. PocketGear and Handango each have distribution relationships with Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Research in Motion, Microsoft, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless.
Executive Jud Bowman will remain as President and CEO of PocketGear and executive Alex Bloom, the current chief executive of Handango will now become Chief Operating Officer of PocketGear.
Interesting to see PocketGear win that one out… Handango always maintained the more corporate-friendly appearance. Probably the bigger issue for both companies will be finding a profit model in the new app normal.
