Following up on the confirmation of the Marketplace as the only approved method for application distribution, Microsoft Windows Phone representative Charlie Kindel has confirmed that devices running Windows Phone 7 Series will not feature memory card slots, instead opting for high capacity internal Flash memory with the goal to provide enough storage for applications and other files.
Kindel further suggested that some phones may go as far as having microSD cards embedded in them and if they do, will be locked in place and inaccessible by consumers. Microsoft also stated that Windows Phone 7 will not allow for true application multitasking as done in Windows Phone Classic, following the same current track as the iPhone, which was indirectly confirmed in this morning’s announcement of the new Microsoft Notification Service.
Third-party applications will not be able to run in the background and those applications using VoIP protocols will be limited in scope. Kindel went on to state:
“Apps that run arbitrarily in the background create an end user experience where battery life and responsiveness of the system becomes … inconsistent. We focused on getting a set of experiences right where we didn’t have to support [multitasking,] but we will over time.”
What is microsoft thinking? Do they really want to get out of the cell phone market? No memory card slot or multitasking? Webos looks better every day and android has already stepped up to the game. This is unbelieveable. The TP2 will probably be my last windows mobile phone.
This is just pathetic. The Touch Pro 2 is my last WinMo phone too unless MS announces some major changes. For them to say SD slots are allowed but will be inaccessible is just ridiculous.
What possible reason could they have for not allowing sd cards? Ridiculous. They are just trying to copy the iPhone, without even knowing why. I can see copying the good features of the iPhone, but they are copying the stuff that even iPhone fanboys want to get rid of.
It’s funny watching Apple move in one direction (multitasking will be allowed in the near future) and watching Microsoft go in the complete opposite direction in a pathetic attempt to copy them.
Looks like it’s Android for me going forward.
Speaking of Android, you know Google had to be happy about the way WinMo is headed. They have to know all the current WinMo users will be jumping ship, with most of them going to Android.
Yep. Android is doing very well right now. I have stuck by wm because Im able to update the roms and use memory cards. The only reason tech savvy customers have stuck with wm is because of being able to change roms to something they like. The rom creators have basically kept microsoft in business. Its just sad when they close the OS and take away memory card slots and only allow you to install programs from their marketplace. There maybe a hack to avoid that but who wants to mess with that when you can just get an android phone? I really hope this is just a rumor and they change this. Maybe before windows 7 phones sprint will come out with their version of the hd2 and that will be my last windows phone in that case.
I am hoping someone makes a Touch Pro 3 (or that style phone) with more RAM, a better processor, a flash for the camera, a better camera, and Android OS. And hopefully it would have T-Mobile 3G.
I can handle Sprint, but it kills me every time I get a text message or a tweet (which I get hundreds every day) and it pauses my Slingplayer. I really miss being able to use data and voice at the same time.
