After being announced in April during the BUILD conference, Microsoft has officially launched the first Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone in the Nokia Lumia 630.
The 630 features a ClearBlack 4.5-inch LCD protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 at 854×480 underpinned by a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage along with a microSD slot with support for the latest 128GB cards. Rounding out the specifications is a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video capture as well as a dedicated low-power DSP in SensorCore for external wearable accessory support.
The phone will launch first this week in Asia and be followed by a European launch within the next few weeks, while the US launch will follow later this Summer with the Lumia 635 on both MetroPCS and T-Mobile. However, Microsoft still has yet to clarify when the Windows Mobile 8.1 update will be available to current Windows Phone 8 smartphone owners, as the company’s support pages were quietly updated to point to a late June roll-out on the 24th of the month, though the date does not take into account individual carrier updates.
