Following this morning’s confirmation of the end of the nascent Nokia X Android initiative, a new memo has surfaced that also confirms the end of the Nokia feature phone, as current Microsoft devices head Mary Jo Harlow has confirmed that Microsoft will stop supporting and developing Nokia Asha and Nokia Series 40 devices over the next 18 months and will focus solely on developing Lumia Windows Phone devices at all pricing levels, as well as a new focus on high-end Lumia flagships in the next few months.
The end of Series 40/Asha as actively developed platforms marks the end of a major era in mobile telephony and hardware, as the Series 40 platform and the later evolution into the touch-focused Nokia Asha platform was responsible for the bulk of Nokia’s revenue and profit over the past 14 years, with millions upon millions of such devices shipped and sold all over the world and were responsible for ushering in the massive growth of mobile service in developing nations.
In addition to the above news, Harlow’s memo also confirmed that the MixRadio service is being considered for a quick sale, with many potential buyers already in discussions to purchase the once Nokia exclusive service.
