In the wake of its merger with T-Mobile, MetroPCS looks to speed up its 4G For All network transition by launching a new $30 monthly service plan with LTE access starting on Friday.
The new plan will be marketed under the “4G for $30” promotional tag and will feature 250MB of data access on LTE every month for the life of the plan. While the data allotment is lower than usual compared to the rest of the 4G plan slate, the obvious intent is clear: MetroPCS wants new customers on LTE from the time they sign up and wants current customers to upgrade as soon as possible.
The promotional plan does feature a few key exceptions, however. First, all LTE devices qualify for the new plan but they must be purchased as new devices from MetroPCS corporate stores or authorized dealers. No previously activated and used devices will be allowed on the new plan, though upgrades to new devices will be allowed.
Second a separate $10 Promotional Fee must be paid at the time of purchase in order to sign up on the plan and will not be waived for those upgrading to new handsets, as those upgrading will be required to pay both the $10 Promotional Fee and the upgrade fee for switching to a new device. The new plan will also be excluded from further discounts, such as the ongoing $5 Family Plan discount.
The new plan is expected to roll out tomorrow with a new advertising campaign under the 4G for All initiative currently underway and the 250MB data allotment will lead to throttling to 3G speeds after it is used up before the billing cycle renews. The plan can be kept active as long as subsequent phone upgrades are also 4G devices and the account is kept active. The plan otherwise features all the hallmarks of the current MetroPCS plan lineup in unlimited voice and messaging along with expanded MetroUSA coverage.
