Hackers have once again bypassed restrictions imposed by Apple, and enabled iPhone to run third-party software.
The process, known as jailbreaking, allows the user to install software onto the device, most notably Nullriver’s Installer.app, which provides access to a wide range of production-grade software.
The most refined application to transact the process currently is iJailbreak, which automates several processes needed to fully break through the restrictions. The application requires the user to first downgrade their firmware to version 1.1.1, use the existing JailbreakMe.com web site, and then follow the on-screen instructions which guide the user through the installation process.
iJailbreak also supports the same process for iPod touch. Next month, Apple will release their Software Development Kit (SDK) for both devices, providing official and secure means to install software on the devices. Apple is relying on the release to reboot struggling sales, billing the additions as making both devices the “first Wi-Fi based platform” for consumers.
