Latest iOS Jailbreak “Evasi0n” Now Available for All iOS 6 Devices

After days of anticipation and a slight delay from a planned release yesterday afternoon, the latest functioning iOS jailbreak in Evasi0n is now available on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The jailbreak is of the untethered variety and requires very little work in terms of jailbreaking finesse, though the usual caveats of jailbreaking apply, such as needing to perform the necessary backups before performing the jailbreak and making sure the device is fully charged and prepared.

The Evasi0n jailbreak works on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, and 6.1, and can be installed on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, 3rd generation iPad , 4th generation iPad , iPad mini, 4th generation iPod touch, and 5th generation iPod touch. One difference that this jailbreak has over previous iterations is the intermediate step of installing a temporary app to complete the jailbreaking process, but is otherwise straightforward.

With iOS 6.x being one of of the most difficult versions of Apple’s operating system to jailbreak compared to previous iOS versions, the appearance of the Evasion jailbreak, while welcome, will mark a more difficult road for exploit hackers going forward as Apple patches both software and hardware level exploits with increasing speed in order to fend off jailbreaking activity.

This does not mean that the activity will be impossible in the future, however. It does mean that the jailbreaking community will have to be prepared to spend more time and effort exploring the software and hardware in order to exploit and create jailbreaking solutions in the future, especially with the forthcoming slate of iOS hardware being eagerly awaited for this year.

Prior to the release of Evasion, there had been considerable doubt concerning whether a jailbreak would be developed for iOS 6 and iOS 6-powered devices, as the usual teams involved with development of jalbreaking solutions have either dropped out of the activity due to lack of time and enthusiasm, or members finding other teams to work with with more consistent release schedules.
